Preliminary iPhone 4 Review

Last night I got to the Los Gatos apple store at 10:45PM to get in line, and luckily my father and I were the 11th and 12th people in line.  After a long night, we were greeting in the morning by lines of cheering and hi-fiving apple store employees.  I really love the apple store product launch environment.  The staff is very friendly and welcoming, even though it eerily continues the impression of Apple being some sort of Kool-Aid sipping cult.

Well at 7:00AM they opened the doors and at 7:12 AM I walked out with my shiny new iPhone 4.  Restoring and activating took less than 5 minutes at home, and when I first picked up the device all I could think was “wow”. When you pick up the device, a combination of three things jump out at you that sets it apart from the 3Gs, 3G and 2.5G iPhones.  The first and most obvious is the feel of the phone in your hand.  It feels like a solid machine, it’s small but dense, as if Apple packed as much firepower into the slim 9.3mm device.  The second thing I noticed was the display.  I thought the Retina Display was a gimmick, of course a gimmick I was highly looking forward to but wow!  The last and most enjoyable thing that jumps out at you is the speed. Oh yes, the speed.

The iPhone 4 is fast.  Think back to a time when you may have upgraded your computer from a Pentium Celeron processor to a shiny new Core 2 Duo or perhaps Core i7 processor.  It’s an immediately noticeable speed improvement.  My previous phone, the iPhone 3G sported a 412MHz processor paired with 128MB of RAM.  The iPhone 4 jumps to a 1GHz Apple A4 chip paired with 512MB of RAM.  Four times the memory, two and a half times the processing power, the phone is a beast.  Applications that used to take 10-20 seconds to launch now launch in milliseconds.  I’m in heaven.

In an upcoming review I’ll post examples of the video and photos, as well as some FaceTime photos.  In the mean time, I look forward to the next two years with this phone.

iPhone 4 pre-order successful!

Yesterday AT&T and Apple were having a lot of difficulty keeping their servers up apparently, and with good reason.  Apple sold more than 600,000 iPhone 4′s on the first day. That’s at least $120,000,000 in revenue on the first day, and definitely more since they sold both $199 and $299 models.

My father and I were two of those 600,000+ pre-orders that managed to get in on the first day, despite technical difficulties.  Looks like we’ll be getting out iPhones on June 24th!

Unfortunately, I wanted a white one and they were only selling black ones on the first day. No big deal though, I’d rather have a black iPhone then have to to wait up to a month for a white iPhone.  I think this year I’m going to camp out overnight at the Los Gatos iPhone store.  In 2008 I waited in line for almost 8 hours with my dad, sister and two of my friends.  It was hot, crowded and boring.  I figure if the doors open at 7 AM, and I get there at midnight, then I’ll have only waited 7 hours, and the weather will be much more agreeable.

In somewhat related news, I got to test out a cool iPad app that is coming to the iPhone soon.  I’m bound to secrecy due to the NDA, but I will say that I did actually land an interview at the company tomorrow! Internships ahoy!

Why I’m looking forward to the iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 was announced on the 7th of June, and I want one badly.

iPhone 4

Is it simply because I’m a fanboy and I’d shell out a couple hundred bucks for a brick if it had an Apple logo on it? Maybe.  But this phone is really impressive. It has some awesome features such as recording movies in HD and editing in iMovie right on your phone, and it has some lackluster features such as iAd and iOS 4.

The market for smart phones is a lot more competitive now than when the first iPhone came out, so the iPhone 4 may not look like the obvious choice for many.  Some will choose to stick with Android phones for their full support of multi-tasking, unlocked operating system and more open app store.  However, I must give credit to Apple even despite their locked iPhone ecosystem.  The iPhone 3G is the first phone I’ve had for the entire 2 year period of my contract.  The phone never once broke, needed repair or anything that would cause me to be unable to replace my phone.  This being said, I have a bit of customer loyalty to Apple.

The main reason I’m looking forward to the iPhone 4 is the A4 processor.  I love my 3G but it is slow, very slow.  I noticed this especially after using my dad’s iPad.  I can only imagine that with an A4 chip in the iPhone 4, it will be lightning fast.  I’m not really talking about games or graphics, but mostly just the snappiness of the interface.  How long does it take to launch an app?  Hopefully instantly, and not the 20+ seconds my iPhone 3G sometimes takes.

Pre-orders of the iPhone 4 begin on June 15.  That’s the day I’ll be pre-ordering mine, for sure.

What the iPad lacks, we might soon see in the iPhone

As the Apple hate machine continues to churn out thousands of reasons the iPad sucks, only a couple have really been worth worrying about.  The biggest shortcoming in my mind, is the lack of a front facing camera.

It seems every Apple product these days – even the iPod Nano – has a camera on it.  It would seem only logical to have a camera on the iPad.  Perhaps the camera was left out intentionally to meet the price goal of $499, but I still think they missed a giant opportunity here.  The way I see it in my mind, is I am sitting on my living room couch, watching the news and my iPad is on the coffee table.  The iPad dings to alert me that I’m receiving an incoming Skype call.  I slide to unlock the tablet, answer the call and just that easily I am video chatting with Kyle, who called to see if I want to hang out.

There is no real reason why that particular conversation would require video chat, however the futuristic feel to it would be such a seller for the iPad.  The iPad would have plenty of hardware speed and network bandwidth over 802.11n for it, making it probably one of the first truly portable video phone devices that isn’t simply a video phone.  Everyone would have an iPad, so everyone would get the benefit of being able to video chat.

However this brings me to my next point, and the reason why I have decided not to get an iPad, at least not for a while.  According to MacRumors, Steve Jobs has said the next iPhone update will be “A+”. My anonymous personal sources have confirmed the obvious; there is a new iPhone coming out this summer, but they wont confirm anything else.  Endgaget is reporting that iPhone OS 3.2 will include support for video chat, among other things.  These two things when combined with Apple’s opening the 3G network to VOIP programs might hint at a forward facing camera for video chat on the next iPhone.  This would be huge.  Video chat would be cool on the iPad, but it would be really awesome on the iPhone.  This is pretty much the only reason I can see for not including a camera on the iPad.

Best iPad complaint so far…

Am I the only one excited about the iPad?

Apple introduces iPad

So today Steve Jobs introduced to the world the Apple iPad.  Essentially just a 10″ iPod touch, a lot of people were upset with this fact.  I’m not.  In fact, this is exactly what I wanted.  I’m surprised.  I didn’t expect much from the iPad, infact I hated the idea of it, and expected it to cost $800.  Boy was I convinced otherwise.

Here is the skinny, in terms of what we know for sure:

  • 1GHz Apple A4 Processor
  • 9.7″ LED Backlit Display
  • 10 hour battery life
  • 802.11n compatible
  • 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models
  • $500 for 16, $600 for 32, $700 for 64

A lot of the negative criticism seems to come from the fact that it doesn’t have an unlocked operating system.  My question to those who wish for an unlocked operating system: why? What are you really expecting to do on a 9.7″ computer? Have you ever used a 9″ netbook?  They are good for very little, and in my opinion they are good for nothing.  The so called “Net Books” are designed for light usage such as surfing the net or checking email.  The iPad clearly out performs a netbook in those tasks, giving you more vertical lines to read web pages and emails.  If I bought one (which I’m considering) the main function of which would be for the mundane tasks which usually drain my iPhone battery.  Surfing reddit, and…. surfing reddit?

But I’m not even scraping the surface on the most important aspect: this computer is, in my view, the world’s first true tablet.  I don’t want to have some little cursor that was designed for tiny hands that I have to use, I can use my fingers.  Ever seen Star Trek TOS? All the starfleet crewmen use a PADD, or Personal Access Display Device.

PADD

PADD, Star Trek

The iPad looks like science fiction, just pick something off a desk and you’re ready to use it.  With  net book you have to pick it up, open it, wait for a couple of seconds while it resumes, log in, and then you can surf the net.  An iPad you can just grab off the desk, swipe and start using.  It’s the ultimate ease of use, and I think it will be very popular among the older generation who have been slower to adopt the net books.

I was hesitant to leave my laptop at home and carry around  netbook, but I think an iPad will blend much easier into a mobile student lifestyle.
